WASHINGTON – On June 30, 2023, Congresswoman Linda T. Sánchez (D-CA) issued the following statement on the Supreme Court’s decision to strike down President Biden’s Student Loan Forgiveness Plan – which would have forgiven up to $20,000 in student loan debt for 43 million student loan borrowers:

“President Biden’s student debt relief plan would have been a lifeline for millions of low- and middle-class Americans saddled with student loan debt. Nearly 90 percent of the relief would have benefited borrowers making less than $75,000 a year. Bottom line: it would have been life-changing for millions of working-class Americans – young and old.

“But as we’ve seen time and again, if it isn’t a handout for the ultra-wealthy, it isn’t for MAGA Republicans or their hand-picked right-wing judges on the Supreme Court.

“A college education is the pathway to the middle class for millions – especially for Black and Latino communities. But for so many – from the moment they arrive at school until long after they graduate – mountains of student loan debt stand in the way of the American Dream.

“The actions taken by the Supreme Court this week risk taking our country back to the days where the road to higher education favored only the white and wealthy. But this fight is far from over. I will never stop working to ensure every single American has access to a college education.”
