WASHINGTON – Congresswoman Linda T. Sánchez (CA-38) on June 29, 2023 issued the following statement responding to the Supreme Court’s decision in Students for Fair Admissions v. President and Fellows of Harvard College and Students for Fair Admissions v. University of North Carolina:

“Every student deserves a fair shot at a quality education — regardless of income, zip code, or color of their skin. And they deserve to share their whole story when applying to college. This decision limits that freedom and undermines the Court’s long-standing support for affirmative action.

“Let’s be clear: affirmative action and diversity in our schools benefit all students. And when colleges reflect the diversity of America, our communities, our work force, and our entire country are all strengthened, too.

“Today’s outrageous #SCOTUS decision will have a negative impact on students across the country —especially our Black, Latino, Native American and AAPI students who already face higher barriers compared to their white classmates.

“But this Court does not decide our values. I will continue to fight for every student — regardless of race and ethnicity — to have an equal opportunity to thrive and participate in our democracy.”
