WASHINGTON – Congresswoman Linda T. Sánchez (D-CA) released the following statement on the House of Representatives passage of the budget agreement to prevent default.

“Since the very beginning of the 118th Congress, Speaker McCarthy and House Republicans have put political games over the American People. Instead of raising the debt ceiling – as Republicans did three times under President Trump with no issues – Speaker McCarthy held our economy hostage by demanding harmful, MAGA policies in exchange for paying bills that Congress and presidents under both political parties have incurred.

“Luckily, President Biden worked with Speaker McCarthy to negotiate in good faith, and secured a compromise that prevents default and funds essential programs seniors and working families across the country rely on. The compromise bill is nowhere near perfect, but it protects the millions of jobs Democrats created last Congress through historic investments in infrastructure and clean energy, ensures our local schools, law enforcement officers, and veterans have the recourses they need, and fully protects Medicare, Social Security, and Medicaid.

“I voted to pass this budget agreement because failure to raise the debt ceiling would devastate our economy from top to bottom. I will not stop pushing my Republican colleagues to put the country first, commit to governing, and stop playing games with the safety and livelihood of the American people.”
